Challenge Somerset 2025: A resounding success, forging Masonic bonds through friendly fire!
The Mendip Shooting Ground echoed with the satisfying crack of clays yesterday, May 2nd, as the Somerset Masonic Shooting Club (SMSC) successfully hosted its inaugural ‘Challenge Somerset’ interprovincial clay shooting day. Brethren from neighbouring provinces – Bristol, Cornwall, Monmouthshire, and Devon – joined their Somerset counterparts for a fantastic day of friendly competition and Masonic camaraderie.
The event proved to be a resounding success, fostering stronger bonds between the participating provinces through the shared enjoyment of the sport. While the competition was fierce yet friendly, the real victory lay in forging new connections and strengthening existing Masonic relationships.
When the dust settled and the scores were tallied, it was the team from Bristol that emerged victorious with an impressive score of 127. Hosts Somerset put in a strong showing to take second place with 117, followed closely by Cornwall in third with 111. Monmouthshire and Devon also demonstrated admirable skill and sportsmanship, finishing with scores of 98 and 91, respectively. Congratulations to all the provinces for their spirited participation!
Individual honours were also keenly contested. S. Carter & J. Reed, both representing Bristol, shared the High Gun title with outstanding scores of 42/50. Somerset’s M. Rewbury secured a well-deserved second place with 40/50, while M. Peake from Cornwall & A. Bullock from Somerset tied for third with impressive scores of 39/50. Heartiest congratulations to all the High Guns!
One of the most pleasing stories of the day involved Somerset’s newest novice shooter, Charlie. Thanks to the combined coaching expertise of the Chairmen from both Somerset and Monmouthshire, who generously shared their knowledge and guidance, Charlie had an incredible score of 31/50 on his very first attempt at clay shooting! This remarkable achievement perfectly encapsulated the spirit of Masonic support and brotherhood that filled the entire event.
The team behind the Somerset Masonic Shooting Club deserves immense credit for their hard work and dedication in organising such a seamless and enjoyable day. Their efforts to bring together brethren from different provinces to share in this sporting pursuit are truly commendable.
‘Challenge Somerset’ has undoubtedly laid a strong foundation for future interprovincial events. The success of this inaugural competition underscores the potential for our Masonic shooting clubs to work together, build lasting friendships, and further strengthen the bonds of Freemasonry across our neighbouring provinces. We eagerly anticipate future opportunities to continue this positive momentum and foster even closer ties through our shared passion for clay shooting and Freemasonry.
